If you are using (or abusing) a substance, such as drugs or alcohol, Addiction Counseling is imperative in order to make a full recovery. Usually addictions begin when an individual starts using a substance as a coping mechanism to deal with unpleasant or negative life events. This substance use becomes habitual and can cause a physical and/or psychological dependency or addiction. In Addiction Counseling, we will together recognize your patterns of substance use in order to determine the cause of your addiction, and then we will work to overcome your addiction with ongoing therapy. With someone to trust and confide in, you will begin to feel better about your issues that are causing you to abuse drugs or alcohol. Together we will figure out what has caused you to get to where you are today, and how we can get your life back on track so that you are able to live a happy and healthy drug-free lifestyle.
Anxiety Therapy or Counseling will reduce feelings of being constantly overwhelmed and out of control. Some people report, “I want to jump out of my skin!” Relaxation techniques, Meditation and exploring the long standing issues that contribute to these intense feelings facilitates recovery.
Depression Therapy and Counseling is designed for people that are either constantly experiencing sadness or have intense episodes of not being able to eat, sleep, work and function in their daily life. In other words, there are degrees of Depression and this needs to be evaluated in order to recommend the best solutions. Sometimes there will be a family history of Depression or a particular event that triggers the episode, like moving or losing your job. You and I are a team and will figure out the best remedy.
Family Therapy or Counseling facilitates communication and solutions between each member of the family. As an example, often parents will focus on a “problem child” who needs to get “fixed”. Through therapy, it becomes apparent that this child is not the real problem, but rather a sibling or parent that does not understand the real issue behind this child’s acting out. This increased insight can provide huge changes for the better.
Individual Therapy or Counseling will give you a greater sense of control of your life. All of the feelings and behaviors that have resulted in either problems communicating, anger, sadness or feeling constantly overwhelmed will be addressed in a safe, supportive setting.
Couples Counseling or Marriage Counseling will primarily focus on teaching each partner to have more compassion and sensitivity rather than disgust and disdain ; that is more tolerance for the differences in each other. This results in more clarity in communication, willingness to look in the mirror rather than the magnifying glass (taking more responsibility for part YOU play in problems) and increased intimacy.
PTSD Counseling and Trauma Therapy are for individuals who just recently experienced a traumatic event or are experiencing “flashbacks” from a previous event that is interfering with their ability to cope. Together in a safe, trusting environment a variety of techniques will be employed including Relaxation and Meditation, talking therapy to release the pent up anxiety and desensitization to gradually return to the place of trauma (if appropriate) such as driving a car after an accident.
Being a survivor of sexual abuse can make living a “normal” life extremely difficult. Individuals who have been sexually abused often unintentionally mask their past experience by exhibiting other symptoms such as Depression, Anxiety, or Substance Abuse. As a sexual abuse survivor, you may feel as though you have no one to talk to about what happened to you because you are embarrassed about it, or feel that you caused it to happen in some way. Together during Sexual Abuse Counseling, we will tackle the unpleasant symptoms that have arisen due to the suppression of your inner torment, and discuss the events of your past in a safe and secure environment so that you are finally able to confront your feelings and regain control over your life.
