Anxiety 101

Anxiety is hardwired into our brains. Seen as the body’s “fight or flight” response, it prepares us to respond quickly when facing danger. Often triggered by life stress, anxiety is a natural response and a necessary warning adaptation or “wake up call” in humans.

While it is true that everyone experiences anxiety now and then, it is seen as needing intervention when symptoms get in the way of the ability to sleep or function at home, on the job, or in other ways. Believed to affect more than 40 million Americans, it is the number one mental health issue facing people today.

Anxiety can show up physically through irritability, headaches, sweating, trembling, muscle tension, dizziness, and restlessness.. Its symptoms may also present as excessive or persistent worry, tension, and nervousness.

Getting help for anxiety: The sooner the better

Having anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of. If you suspect that you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder, the sooner you get help the better. If you allow anxiety to take root and curtail your activities, avoiding things that make you feel uncomfortable it may have the undesirable effect of compounding the impact of anxiety on your life.

Talking to a therapist and ventilating anxious thoughts and feelings is one way to begin the process of putting anxiety in its place. Some people may benefit from just a few sessions of talk therapy; others may find it helpful to participate on a more ongoing basis. A therapist can give you guidance on self-help strategies to use outside the office as well, maximizing the benefit of the therapy process.

A book I frequently recommend on the subject of anxiety is “Anxiety relief:relax the body & calm the mind,” by Martin Rossman.
